MediaRecorder – Synchronised video and audio recording
Records video and audio from up to eight cameras at once and writes them as one synchronised session. Recording starts when the observation starts in The Observer XT, and the video comes back linked to the scored events. Available as a 4, 6 or 8 channel solution.
What MediaRecorder does
MediaRecorder records video and audio from several cameras at once and writes them as one synchronised session. It is the recording layer of a Noldus observation lab, and the reason the video and the scored behaviour line up afterwards.
Recording starts when you start an observation in The Observer XT and stops when the observation ends. The video is linked to that observation and synchronised with the scored events, so nobody is aligning files by hand.

Studies typically report multi-camera recording of interaction, with the video coded against physiology or eye tracking collected in the same session.
How many cameras can MediaRecorder handle?
Up to eight simultaneously, and it is sold as a 4, 6 or 8 recording solution. That lets you record the same scene from several angles in one session rather than reconciling separate recordings afterwards.
Does it record audio as well as video?
Yes, with or without sound. For interaction studies, interviews and any protocol where speech is part of the coding, the audio is recorded alongside the video in the same session.
How does it stay in sync with The Observer XT?
Recording starts automatically when you start an observation in The Observer XT and stops when the observation ends. The video is linked to that observation and synchronised with the scored events, so there is no manual alignment step.
Can it record wearable eye tracking?
From version 6.5 it records Tobii Glasses, including several participants at the same time. That is what lets a mobile eye tracking session sit in the same observation as the room cameras.
Does it work with our existing cameras?
In most cases yes. MediaRecorder supports a broad range of digital cameras up to 4K as well as analog systems. Send us the camera models you already have and we will tell you what carries over and what does not.
