Why should I use The Observer?
With efficient behavioral coding, seamless integration of multiple data streams, and one-click control for recording devices, you can trust that your data is synchronized and visualized clearly. The Observer ensures reliable, publication-ready results every time.
Plus, with team workflow management and automated backups, you can feel secure knowing your data is safe and your research on track.
Efficiently manage your workflow
With The Observer®, your entire project workflow is covered, from setting up coding schemes to creating detailed filters for data analysis. This ensures you're fully prepared to collect rich, meaningful data that drives impactful results.
Access to raw data gives you control over your own data. In addition, the raw data is always available for further custom analysis in your own or other algorithm-based software, for cross-reference. Good to know is that your data is always safe because of the automated back-up function. You don't have to worry about losing valuable information.
Reliable results for publication
Boost your chances of getting published in high-impact journals by using The Observer, the most trusted tool for behavioral research. Cited in over 15,000 peer-reviewed studies, it's the go-to solution for researchers who want reliable, credible results that meet the highest academic standards.
With The Observer, all your data streams are organized in a clear overview, making it easy to see and showcase your findings. Visualizing your data not only helps you understand it better but also lets you create professional figures for your publications.
Easily code behaviors
The coding part of your research is a time-consuming, but necessary activity. Coding videos will help you summarize and highlight important pieces of information that are essential for the analysis of the observed behavior.
The Observer is designed to speed up your work! It helps to discover behavior patterns, outliers, deviations, or anomalies and to answer all your research questions. Besides, to make coding visually more attractive and transparent, the encoded behaviors are updated as you score.
Synchronization of data simplified
Get complete insight in behavior and physiology and take advantage of fully integrated equipment. Besides annotation of behavior from video, all types of data, such as facial expressions, eye tracking data, physiological signals, EEG data, and screen captures can be imported in The Observer.
Synchronization is key to understanding behavior patterns. Perfect sync of all data streams is what you need and is what The Observer offers. Moreover, it will cost you a minimum of effort; the system does all the work.
Avoid bias: compare observations
In collaborative projects it is vital to avoid observer bias. An important tool to detect this, is reliability analysis: observations by different coders (inter-rater) are compared record by record. The software reports Cohen’s Kappa, along with a listing of agreements and disagreements. Reliability analysis is also used for intra-rater reliability, a basic quality check. The output includes a confusion matrix.
You can easily spot the disagreements between two observers (or observations of the same scene). Results are clear and quickly available.

What does the software offer me?

The Observer® allows for:
- study setup and coding scheme design
- synchronized playback of multiple video files
- live coding and offline editing
- general analysis, reliability & lag sequential analysis
- presentation of behavioral data
Depending on your research needs, you can extend this with additional functionalities for integration of external data or E-prime, adding capabilities that streamline complex study designs.
Which hardware do I need?
Important factors for the system requirements include the use of video, the amount of data, the complexity of data selections and analyses, and the size of external data files. For optimal performance and functionality, an up-to-date computer system is strongly recommended.
The minimum requirements for workstations are:
- Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Dell Precision T3660 or higher
- CPU Intel Core i5 8500
- 16 GB memory
- The Observer comes with a complete codec package that can process almost all videos
We recommend to remove other software (video recording, editing, or burning) or codecs which could interfere with The Observer XT.
