SomnoFlo O2Care Low-Flow Anesthesia System
Kent Scientific’s next-generation low-flow vaporizer with built-in oxygen blending: dial the carrier gas to 21%, 35%, 50%, 70% or 100% O₂ from the touchscreen — no external mixer, no custom cylinders. Same ultra-low-flow architecture as the SomnoSuite® (down to 100 mL/min) with no annual calibration, sized for modern FiO₂-titrated rodent anesthesia and recovery workflows.

What is SomnoFlo® O2Care?
SomnoFlo® O2Care from Kent Scientific is a low-flow electronic anesthesia vaporizer that blends ambient air with 100% compressed oxygen internally — letting researchers dial the carrier-gas FiO₂ to 21%, 35%, 50%, 70% or 100% directly from the touchscreen. No external gas mixer, no custom blend cylinders, and no compromises on oxygen safety for long-duration anesthesia or recovery.
Recent veterinary research has shown that 100% oxygen carrier gas can produce unintended off-target effects during anesthesia, while 21% room-air alone may not protect against hypoxia in extended procedures. O2Care’s on-demand blending closes that gap: titrate FiO₂ against SpO₂ feedback in real time, find the optimal oxygen percentage to maintain SpO₂ > 95%, and run the rest of the procedure on it.
Key Features
- Five blended O₂ settings (21%–100%): Switch between room air, 35%, 50%, 70% and 100% O₂ from the touchscreen — no mixers, no swap-out cylinders.
- Ultra-low flow (as low as 100 mL/min): Same low-flow architecture as SomnoSuite® — minimal anesthetic consumption and waste gas footprint.
- Internal air pump or compressed gas: Operates from ambient air or a compressed-gas line; pair with SOMNO-7305 pressure reducer if the regulator exceeds 15 psi.
- FiO₂-titrated anesthesia: Refine protocols by titrating inspired oxygen against pulse oximetry — supports modern animal-welfare best practice.
- No annual calibration: Like the rest of the Somno line, O2Care uses active vaporization — no annual service contract, no calibration certificate to chase.
- Compact, touchscreen UI: Same Somno form factor; stacks into existing Kent anesthesia + monitoring towers.
- Welfare-driven anesthesia: Designed for long procedures, recovery cages, and emergency oxygen support where 21% air is not enough.

Why blended oxygen matters in modern anesthesia
A growing body of veterinary research has shown that pure oxygen as a carrier gas can produce unintended off-target effects: increased oxidative stress, atelectasis, and altered cardiovascular and neurological responses. At the same time, 21% room air is not always enough to prevent hypoxia in long procedures or compromised animals. The practical answer in human and large-animal clinical care has long been to titrate FiO₂ against SpO₂ — the same principle is now possible at the rodent bench.
SomnoFlo O2Care brings clinical-grade FiO₂ control to small-animal anesthesia. Researchers can run a procedure on 35% or 50% blended oxygen, monitor SpO₂, and only escalate to 70% or 100% if pulse oximetry demands it. The result: less off-target oxygen exposure, fewer respiratory artifacts in physiological recordings, and a more reproducible anesthesia plane across long sessions — all without changing how the rest of the anesthesia rig is wired.
Typical Use Cases
- Long-duration rodent surgery and stereotaxic procedures requiring titrated FiO₂.
- Post-operative recovery and ICU cages where supplemental oxygen is helpful but 100% is excessive.
- Emergency oxygen support during anesthesia events.
- Imaging and physiology studies where avoiding hyperoxia-induced artifacts is important.
- Vivariums standardizing on the Somno line who want FiO₂ control alongside their existing SomnoSuite® stations.

Titrated FiO₂ anesthesia is an emerging best practice in laboratory animal research, motivated by recent findings that 100% O₂ carrier gas can produce unintended off-target effects. Studies referencing O2Care typically describe SpO₂-titrated oxygen blending for long-duration rodent surgery, imaging and recovery workflows.
