Why isoflurane inhalation anesthesia is the gold standard
Inhalation anesthesia has displaced injectable anesthesia in most rodent research workflows because the same dose can be titrated breath-by-breath. With a blood/gas partition coefficient as low as 1.4, isoflurane reaches surgical depth within one minute and washes out within one minute of discontinuation. Over 98% of the agent is eliminated via respiration, so liver and kidney effects are minimal — critical for PK/PD, toxicology, and long-term repeat-dose studies.
