NanoFil™ Gas-Tight Injection System
The NanoFil™ is WPI's precision gas-tight syringe system for nanoliter-scale in vivo injections. Its patented zero dead volume design eliminates oil backfilling, accepts interchangeable needles down to 36G, and delivers sub-microliter accuracy for stereotaxic, viral vector, and ophthalmic research.

What is the NanoFil™ Gas-Tight Injection System?
The WPI NanoFil™ (VAR-3167) is a precision gas-tight syringe system engineered for ultra-low-volume injections in small animal research. Unlike conventional syringes that rely on oil backfilling to push fluid to the needle tip, NanoFil™ features a patented zero dead volume design: interchangeable needles advance directly into the syringe barrel, creating a 1:1 connection with the plunger. This eliminates virtually all dead volume and delivers accurate, reproducible nanoliter-scale injections with every use.
Developed in direct response to researcher demand for improved microinjection in mice and other small animals, NanoFil™ has become the gold standard for targeted in vivo delivery — from viral vector (AAV) injections into the brain to sub-retinal and intravitreal delivery in ophthalmology research.
Key Features
- Zero Dead Volume: Needles thread directly into the barrel, creating a 1:1 plunger-to-needle connection that eliminates dead volume and enables nanoliter precision.
- No Oil Backfilling Required: Eliminates the need for messy, contamination-prone oil-backfilled systems — essential for sensitive applications such as gene therapy and ophthalmic injections.
- Patented Silicone Gasket: An olive-shaped silicone gasket secures the needle tip, accommodating both metal needles and Silflex tubing.
- Tri-Surface Beveled Needles: WPI’s unique tri-tip bevel provides minimal tissue displacement and smoother entry compared to single-cut bevels — individually handcrafted and tested.
- Universal Needle Compatibility: All NanoFil needles are interchangeable across any NanoFil syringe barrel, with gauges from 26G down to 36G in blunt and beveled styles.
- Pump System Compatible: Directly attaches to WPI’s UMP3 syringe pump for stereotaxic and manipulator-mounted setups; also fully compatible with the MMP and DMP pumping systems.
- Inert, Biologically Compatible Materials: All seals are constructed from biologically inert materials for superior chemical compatibility across a wide range of agents.
