UMP3 Microinjection Syringe Pump

The WPI UMP3 (UltraMicroPump3) is a precision microinjection syringe pump paired with the MICRO2T SMARTouch™ touchscreen controller. Delivers or withdraws as little as 25 nL, accepts syringes from 0.5 µL to 1000 µL, and mounts directly to stereotaxic frames and micromanipulators for accurate targeted injections.

UMP3 Microinjection Syringe Pump

The UMP3 (UltraMicroPump3) is WPI's precision microinjection syringe pump, designed to deliver or withdraw microliter-to-nanoliter volumes with exceptional accuracy and repeatability. Paired with the MICRO2T SMARTouch™ touchscreen controller, the UMP3 system is the standard choice for stereotaxic microinjections, cannulation drug delivery, intravitreal and intraocular injections, and microfluidic applications in neuroscience and life science research.

The UMP3 accepts a wide range of glass microsyringes from 0.5 µL to 1000 µL, including WPI’s NanoFil™ system, Hamilton, SGE, and ILS syringes (barrel diameters 5.5–9 mm). Using a 10 µL syringe, the system can deliver or withdraw as little as 25 nL per injection. The pump mounts directly to most stereotaxic frames and micromanipulators via a built-in mounting bar, and an optional foot switch enables hands-free recording of injection events.

The MICRO2T SMARTouch™ controller features a splash-proof touchscreen interface, dual-channel motor drive for simultaneous control of two UMP3 pumps, built-in memory for saving settings between sessions, and USB computer control for scripted protocols. A graphical display shows rate and volume remaining in the syringe in real time.

Patent-Pending SMARTouch™ Technology

Total system calibration: Calibrate the syringe and controller together as a system, eliminating syringe variability and ensuring the exact configured volume is delivered or withdrawn. Smart Smoothness: Automatically adjusts microstepping according to the injection rate for smooth, low-noise delivery. User-defined travel limits: Set custom drive limits on the MICRO2T to prevent the UMP3 from exceeding its range. End-stop detection dependent on syringe volume. Pause/Resume function for incremental dosing or sample collection during infusion or withdrawal.

Flexibility in Mounting and Configuration

The UMP3 mounts to any WPI micropositioner including the M3301 (manual) and DC3001 (motorized), as well as most stereotaxic manipulators. For retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) injections, the RPE-KIT mounts a NanoFil™ syringe on the UMP3 for accurate submicroliter injections. The controller is fully backward-compatible with all previous UMP3 models.

Applications

Stereotaxic microinjection in rodent and primate models. Cannulation and chronic drug delivery. Intravitreal injection (with RPE-KIT). Intraocular injection (with IO-KIT). Micro delivery of biochemical agents, dyes, and viral vectors. Accurate microinjection of solution into tissue. Microfluidic sample delivery and extraction. Precise control of nanoliter-to-milliliter volumes in life science research.

Available Configurations

UMP3 (Pump Only), UMP3T-1 (1 pump + MICRO2T SMARTouch™ controller), UMP3T-2 (2 pumps + MICRO2T controller), MICRO2T (SMARTouch™ Two-Channel Controller only). Computer control is available via USB on the rear of the MICRO2T. Note: glass syringes with barrel diameters from 5.5 to 9 mm are accepted; end-stop positions must be set on the MICRO2T before use.

FAQ

What is the minimum injection volume of the UMP3?

Using a 10 µL syringe with a 60 mm stroke length, the UMP3 can deliver or withdraw as little as 25 nL per injection. This makes it suitable for highly precise, targeted microinjections in stereotaxic neuroscience and cell biology applications.

What syringes are compatible with the UMP3?

The UMP3 accepts glass microsyringes with barrel diameters from 5.5 to 9 mm and volumes from 0.5 µL to 1000 µL, including WPI’s NanoFil™ system, Hamilton, SGE, and ILS syringes. The NanoFil™ system is recommended for gas-tight, zero dead-volume performance.

Can the MICRO2T control two pumps simultaneously?

Yes. The MICRO2T SMARTouch™ controller is a two-channel system capable of independently controlling two UMP3 pumps simultaneously. Each pump can be programmed with its own rate, volume, and direction settings.

What is Total System Calibration?

Total System Calibration is a Patent Pending feature of the MICRO2T that calibrates the syringe and controller together as a unit. This eliminates variability introduced by the syringe itself and ensures the exact configured volume is delivered or withdrawn, improving reproducibility across experiments.

How does the UMP3 mount to a stereotaxic frame?

The UMP3 has a built-in mounting bar that attaches directly to most stereotaxic frames and micromanipulators, including WPI’s M3301 (manual) and DC3001 (motorized) micropositioners. It is compatible with most major stereotaxic systems used in neuroscience research.

Is computer control available for the MICRO2T?

Yes. A USB port on the rear of the MICRO2T controller allows connection to a computer for scripted injection protocols. A Python program (MC2T_SW) is available for download from WPI’s website for automated control.

Is the UMP3 available and supported in Israel?

Yes. The WPI UMP3 Microinjection Syringe Pump system is distributed and supported in Israel by NBT Ltd. Our team provides expert guidance on system configuration, syringe selection, mounting, and stereotaxic injection protocols for neuroscience and life science research.
