Microelectrode Arrays (MEA)
ISO 9001:2015 certified Microelectrode Arrays (MEAs) available with 32–252 TiN electrodes, Multiwell plates for 24/96-well drug screening, and flexible FlexMEAs for in vivo recordings — compatible with MEA2100, CMOS-MEA5000, and more.

ISO 9001:2015 Certified MEA Production
Microelectrode Arrays (MEAs) from Multi Channel Systems are produced by NMI Technologie Transfer GmbH (NMI-TT), a company dedicated to applied research using utmost biocompatible materials. Founded in 2002 as a subsidiary of the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute at the University of Tübingen, NMI-TT and Multi Channel Systems have collaborated on many projects over many years. ISO 9001:2015 certified production ensures that every MEA meets excellent and consistent quality standards.
MEAs with 32, 60, 120 or 252 Electrodes
Standard MEAs fit in MEA2100-Systems, MEA1060 amplifiers, and the USB-MEA256-System. Electrodes are coated with titanium nitride (TiN), a very stable material that guarantees MEAs can be reused several times. The majority have glass carriers, facilitating examination under any upright or inverted microscope.
Key Features
- Available with opaque (titanium) and transparent (ITO) tracks and contact pads
- Most types available with internal reference electrode replacing the Ag/AgCl pellet in the bath
- Long life — can be reused several times
- Electrode layouts for all applications
- Electrodes with very low impedance
- Electrodes as small as 8 μm in diameter
- Perforated MEAs available for excellent electrode-contact
- All ring options (glass or plastic): height 6 mm
- Custom layouts available on request
Multiwell Plates for High Throughput
For medium and high throughput applications, Multiwell plates with 24 or 96 wells are available for drug screening or toxicity testing.
- TiN electrodes on glass: 24 wells, 12 electrodes/well, 30 μm electrode diameter, 300 μm spacing — ideal for neuronal cultures
- Gold electrodes on epoxy: 24 wells (12 electrodes/well) or 96 wells (3 electrodes/well), 100 μm electrode diameter, 700 μm spacing — ideal for iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes
Flexible MEAs for In Vivo and Ex Vivo Recordings
FlexMEAs feature electrodes embedded in a thin, highly flexible polyimide foil. This flexibility allows tight attachment to the surface of brain or heart preparations. Available with 24, 36 or 72 electrodes of gold or TiN on polyimide foil, FlexMEAs are the ideal solution for recordings from multiple species in both acute and long-term chronic experiments.

FAQ
What electrode configurations are available for Multi Channel Systems MEAs?
MEAs are available with 32, 60, 120 or 252 electrodes to suit different recording requirements. Electrodes are coated with titanium nitride (TiN) for excellent stability and low impedance, and can be as small as 8 μm in diameter. Most types are available with internal reference electrodes, and custom electrode layouts can be arranged on request.
Which recording systems are the standard MEAs compatible with?
Standard TiN MEAs are compatible with the MEA2100-Systems, MEA1060 amplifiers, and the USB-MEA256-System. Multiwell MEA plates are designed for the Multiwell-MEA-System, CMOS-MEAs are designed for the CMOS-MEA5000-System, and FlexMEAs are compatible with dedicated headstage preamplifiers for in vivo and ex vivo recordings.
Can MEAs be reused, and are they biocompatible?
Yes. MEAs are manufactured using utmost biocompatible materials under ISO 9001:2015 certified production processes. The titanium nitride (TiN) electrode coating is highly stable and enables multiple reuses with proper cleaning. Glass carriers allow examination under any upright or inverted microscope, and detailed cleaning protocols are provided in the MEA Cleaning Quick Guide.
What are FlexMEAs and when should they be used?
FlexMEAs feature electrodes embedded in a thin, flexible polyimide foil that conforms tightly to curved biological surfaces such as brain or heart preparations. They are available with 24, 36 or 72 electrodes in gold or TiN configurations and are the ideal choice for acute or long-term chronic in vivo and ex vivo recordings where rigid MEAs cannot achieve sufficient electrode-tissue contact.
