LUX Infrared Illuminator
High-power infrared backlighting platform for Ugo Basile IR-transparent mazes. 850 nm wavelength; adjustable 0–100% intensity; homogeneous illumination for shadow-free animal tracking in complete darkness. Models: LUX 70 (70×70 cm), LUX 8060, LUX 100 (100×100 cm), LUX 160 (160×160 cm).

What is the LUX Infrared Illuminator?
The LUX Infrared Illuminator series provides uniform below-maze infrared backlighting for Ugo Basile's range of IR-transparent maze apparatuses. By illuminating from below at 850 nm, the LUX eliminates shadows and provides consistent animal silhouettes regardless of fur color — making it equally effective for black, white, and agouti coats that challenge conventional overhead IR illumination. The system supports experiments in complete darkness, preventing circadian disruption, light-induced stress responses, and light-aversion artifacts that confound many standard maze protocols.
Key Features
- Below-Maze Illumination: IR light projected from beneath the maze floor creates a uniform silhouette of the animal against the floor, providing superior tracking contrast compared to overhead IR or visible light.
- Adjustable Intensity (0–100%): Stepless dimming from 0 to 100% allows researchers to optimize illumination for specific cameras, mazes, and fur colors without altering the experimental dark environment.
- 850 nm Wavelength: Operates at 850 nm — invisible to rodents, which have poor near-infrared sensitivity — ensuring complete darkness from the animal's perspective throughout the experiment.
- Multiple Sizes: Four models cover maze sizes from 70 × 70 cm (LUX 70) to 160 × 160 cm (LUX 160), matching the footprint of all Ugo Basile IR mazes including Open Fields, Plus/Zero Mazes, Y-Mazes, and Radial Mazes.
- High Load Capacity: Supports maze loads of 35–45 kg (LUX 70/100) and up to 65 kg (LUX 160), accommodating all standard maze apparatus weights.

Explore All ProductsWhich mazes is the LUX compatible with?
The LUX Infrared Illuminator is compatible with all Ugo Basile IR-transparent maze apparatuses, including the IR Open Field, IR Elevated Plus Maze, IR Elevated Zero-Maze, IR Y-Maze, IR T-Maze, and IR Radial Maze. Match the LUX model size to your maze footprint.
Why is below-maze illumination better than overhead IR?
Below-maze illumination creates a consistent silhouette of the animal regardless of fur color and eliminates the background shadows and reflections that degrade tracking accuracy with overhead illumination. It also allows the maze walls and floor to remain uniformly lit, removing positional lighting gradients that could act as cues.
What wavelength does the LUX emit and why is it invisible to rodents?
The LUX emits at 850 nm. Rodents have two cone photopigments peaking around 360 nm (UV) and 508 nm (green), with very poor sensitivity above 700 nm — making 850 nm effectively invisible to mice and rats while remaining detectable by standard CCD and CMOS cameras.
What load can the LUX platform support?
LUX 70, LUX 8060, and LUX 100 support loads of 35–45 kg. The larger LUX 160 supports up to 65 kg, accommodating heavy rat-sized apparatus and any reinforced maze structures.
Can the LUX be used with video-tracking software?
Yes — the LUX series is validated for use with the Ugo Basile ANY-maze video-tracking system (Cat. 60000) and is compatible with all major tracking software packages that support standard camera inputs (USB, HDMI, GigE).
