ibidi Mounting Medium
A ready-to-use mounting medium optimised for fluorescence microscopy in ibidi µ-Slides and µ-Dishes. Contributes no detectable autofluorescence, preserving bright signals against a genuinely dark background. Supplied in a dropper bottle for precise, bubble-free dispensing into narrow channels and open wells.

What is the ibidi Mounting Medium?
The ibidi Mounting Medium is a ready-to-use embedding medium formulated specifically for fluorescence microscopy in ibidi µ-Slides and µ-Dishes. It preserves fluorescence signal intensity while contributing essentially no autofluorescence of its own, so weak signals stay visible against a genuinely dark background.
The medium ships in a dropper bottle, which matters more than it sounds: dispensing into a narrow µ-Slide channel or a small open well is awkward with a standard bottle, and the dropper gives controlled, bubble-free delivery.
Key Features
- No autofluorescence: A clean spectral background means brighter apparent signals and better signal-to-noise in quantitative imaging.
- Ready to use: No mixing, no curing chemistry to prepare — apply directly after the final wash step.
- Dropper bottle dispensing: Designed for exact delivery into µ-Slide channels and open wells without trapping air.
- Broadly compatible: Validated for widefield fluorescence, confocal microscopy and standard immunofluorescence workflows.
- Refractive index matched to ibidi labware: Minimises optical aberration when imaging through polymer coverslip bottoms.

The ibidi Mounting Medium appears throughout immunofluorescence methods sections, particularly in confocal and quantitative imaging studies where low background autofluorescence is required for reliable signal quantification.
Does this mounting medium harden or cure?
It is a non-hardening (soft-set) medium. This is deliberate for ibidi labware, where samples are usually imaged in the same chamber they were cultured in rather than being coverslipped and sealed. It means samples stay accessible, but it also means the chamber should be kept flat and sealed for storage.
Why does autofluorescence matter so much for a mounting medium?
Any fluorescence contributed by the medium itself raises the background floor of the image. That reduces effective dynamic range and makes weak specific signals harder to distinguish, which is particularly damaging in quantitative imaging where intensity is being measured rather than just observed.
Is it compatible with the polymer bottom of ibidi labware?
Yes. The refractive index is matched to ibidi chamber materials, so imaging through a polymer coverslip bottom does not introduce the aberration you would get from a mismatched medium. It works equally well with the glass bottom versions.
How long can stained samples be stored in this medium?
Samples can typically be stored for weeks at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius protected from light, though fluorophore stability varies considerably between dyes. As with any mounting medium, the practical limit is set by the least photostable fluorophore in your panel rather than by the medium itself.
Should I use this or the version containing DAPI?
Use this version if you are already staining nuclei with another dye, if DAPI would conflict with a channel in your panel, or if you need control over nuclear stain concentration. Choose the DAPI version when you want mounting and nuclear counterstaining in a single step.
