Circular Pools for Morris Water Maze

What is the Morris Water Maze?

The Morris Water Maze (MWM) is the gold standard for assessing hippocampal-dependent spatial learning and memory in rodents. Developed by Richard Morris in 1981, the paradigm places animals in a pool of opaque water and requires them to locate a hidden escape platform using distal room cues. Because the platform location is fixed and external landmarks serve as the only navigational guides, the MWM specifically engages place cell networks in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. The Ugo Basile Circular Pools are purpose-engineered for MWM protocols, constructed from lightweight alimentary-grade fiberglass with embedded mobility wheels and a simple drainage system.

Key Features

  • Alimentary-Grade Fiberglass: The tank walls and floor are constructed from high-quality alimentary-grade fiberglass — durable, non-porous, and compatible with all commercial water opacifiers including non-toxic tempera paint and titanium dioxide suspension.
  • Low Weight, High Durability: Despite their large diameter, the fiberglass construction keeps tank weight significantly lower than equivalent acrylic or steel tanks, allowing easy repositioning and storage between cohorts.
  • Integrated Mobility Wheels: Lockable wheels embedded in the base allow the pool to be moved freely when unlocked and secured firmly during experiments, enabling use in multiple rooms within the same facility.
  • Simple Drainage System: A below-tank drain valve allows rapid emptying between sessions without tipping or siphoning, reducing inter-session preparation time in high-throughput labs.
  • Multiple Diameters: Available in 100 cm (mice/small rats, Cat. 40105), 120 cm (Cat. 40125), 150 cm (Cat. 40155), and 180 cm (rats, Cat. 40185) to match species body size, swimming ability, and lab space constraints.

What diameters are available for the Morris Water Maze pools?

Four diameters are available: Cat. 40105 (100 cm, suitable for mice and small rats), Cat. 40125 (120 cm), Cat. 40155 (150 cm), and Cat. 40185 (180 cm, recommended for adult rats). All share the same 60 cm tank height.

What makes the MWM sensitive to hippocampal function?

Because the escape platform is submerged and invisible, animals cannot use cue-approach strategies. They must form a cognitive map of the arena using distal room cues — a process that critically depends on hippocampal place cells (CA1, CA3) and entorhinal grid cells.

Can the pools be used with the Atlantis automated platform system?

Yes — the Circular Pools are designed to be compatible with the Atlantis Platform System (Cat. 40100 for 1 platform, Cat. 40400 for 4 platforms), which allows the hidden platform to rise and submerge on command without manual intervention, enabling uninterrupted probe trials and reversal learning protocols.

What water opacifier is recommended?

Non-toxic white tempera paint (available at art supply stores) at approximately 1 L per 150 L of water is the most commonly used opacifier. Titanium dioxide powder (food grade) is an alternative. The Ugo Basile fiberglass is compatible with both and easy to clean after use.

How is the probe trial interpreted?

In a standard probe trial (platform removed, 60-second free swim), spatial memory is assessed by the percentage of time and swim path length in the target quadrant (where the platform was located). Animals with intact hippocampal memory spend significantly more than 25% (chance) in the target quadrant.
