Microdrill – The high speed drill for stereotaxic use
The high speed drill is designed for opening the skull in stereotaxic surgery, to implant electrode, cannula, and microdialysis probes, etc. This drill is easy to handle and operate.

What is the RWD Microdrill?
The RWD Microdrill (Cat. 78001) is a compact, high-speed drill designed specifically for stereotaxic surgery in small laboratory animals. It is used to open the skull with precision to allow implantation of electrodes, cannulas, and microdialysis probes. The drill connects to the power supply unit, making drilling faster, simpler, and more controlled compared to manual burring. It can be mounted directly onto the stereotaxic instrument arm via the dedicated Microdrill Holder (Cat. 68605), enabling manipulator-guided, hands-free drilling at a precise stereotaxic coordinate.
Key Features
- High Speed — Up to 38,000 rpm: The continuously adjustable speed enables fast skull penetration as well as slow, controlled grinding — adapting to bone thickness and the researcher's technique.
- Forward and Reverse Rotation: Bidirectional rotation allows the drill bit to be both advanced into the skull and retracted cleanly, reducing the risk of the bit binding or pulling bone fragments.
- Manual or Foot Pedal Control: Two control modes give researchers the flexibility to operate the drill with one hand while stabilizing the animal with the other, or to keep both hands free using the foot pedal.
- Stereotaxic Mount Compatible: Attaches to the stereotaxic instrument via the Microdrill Holder (Cat. 68605), enabling precise, coordinate-guided drilling without holding the drill by hand.
- Wide Range of Drill Bits: Round tip and flat tip drill bits are available in diameters from 0.5 mm to 2.3 mm (sold separately), covering all common craniotomy hole sizes for rodent stereotaxic work.
