LA Pias Mouse Ear Tags
Lightweight aluminum, pre-numbered ear tags from Kent Scientific for permanent individual ID of mice, rats and other small rodents. Five colors (Black, Blue, Green, Light Blue, Red) plus number ranges from 1–100 through 1–999 let labs visually code cohorts and match pack size to colony size. Autoclavable; designed for use with the LA Pias Ear Tag Applicator (sold separately).

What are the LA Pias Mouse Ear Tags?
The LA Pias Mouse Ear Tags from Kent Scientific are lightweight aluminum identification tags designed specifically for mice, rats and other rodents in research vivariums. Each tag is numbered for permanent individual identification — a routine requirement for colony management, breeding programs, longitudinal studies and any protocol that requires per-animal data tracking.
Tags are available in five colors (Black, Blue, Green, Light Blue, Red) so groups can be visually coded at a glance, and in number ranges from 1–100 through 1–999 — buy exactly the count and numbering you need. All variants are autoclavable, so tags can be sterilized with the rest of the surgical kit.
Key Features
- Lightweight aluminum: Minimal weight on the animal’s ear; durable across the lifetime of the study.
- Pre-numbered: Sequential numbering eliminates marker-pen workflows and avoids re-marking over the study lifetime.
- Five colors: Black, Blue, Green, Light Blue and Red — visually code cohorts, treatment groups, or generations.
- Numbered in ranges: 1–100, 101–200, … up to 1–999 — match the pack size to the colony size.
- Autoclavable: Sterilize alongside the rest of the surgical kit.
- Applicator-compatible: Designed for use with the Kent LA Pias Ear Tag Applicator (sold separately).

Why permanent ear tagging matters
Modern rodent research increasingly requires per-animal data — longitudinal behavioral testing, repeated imaging, breeding pedigree, treatment-arm tracking, regulatory traceability for GLP studies. Permanent ear tags are the standard solution. Compared to ear punching, tags carry a unique number rather than a pattern that has to be decoded, which reduces transcription errors when running large cohorts. Compared to RFID, aluminum tags are dramatically cheaper, don’t require a reader, and don’t fail under MRI or strong magnetic fields.
The LA Pias tags are sized specifically for the mouse and rat ear (3.5 mm O.D. with a 3 mm pin), so they sit cleanly without obscuring landmarks needed for surgery or imaging. Color-coding gives an additional, at-a-distance group identifier — a meaningful efficiency gain for vivariums running multi-treatment-arm studies.
Typical Use Cases
- Per-animal ID in longitudinal behavior, pharmacology and imaging studies.
- Breeding-colony management and pedigree tracking.
- Treatment-arm visual coding via the five tag colors.
- Regulatory traceability for GLP / IACUC documentation.
- Alternative to ear punching where unique-number ID is preferred.
