LA Pias Ear Tag Applicator
Dedicated metal applicator from Kent Scientific for placing LA Pias mouse and rat ear tags. Purpose-built geometry produces consistent tag closure across high-volume colony tagging, eliminating the operator-to-operator variability that drives tag loss. Available in standard and autoclavable versions — pick the version that fits your vivarium’s sterilization SOPs.

What is the LA Pias Ear Tag Applicator?
The LA Pias Ear Tag Applicator from Kent Scientific is the dedicated metal applicator for placing LA Pias aluminum ear tags on mice, rats and other small rodents. It provides controlled, consistent tag closure across large cohorts — a meaningful workflow improvement when an animal facility is tagging hundreds or thousands of animals across a breeding program or study lifecycle.
Two configurations are offered: a standard metal applicator and an autoclavable version. The autoclavable variant is the right pick for facilities that sterilize the applicator with the rest of the surgical kit between use sessions.
Key Features
- Purpose-built for LA Pias tags: Geometry matched to the LA Pias 3.5 mm O.D. / 3 mm pin tag format — consistent closure every time.
- Two versions: Standard metal applicator or autoclavable applicator — match the choice to vivarium sterilization SOPs.
- Built for routine use: Designed for high-volume animal ID and colony management workflows.
- Long service life: All-metal construction stands up to daily vivarium use.

Why a purpose-built applicator matters
Inconsistent tag closure is the most common cause of tag loss in mouse and rat colonies — either the tag pin doesn’t fully bend (and the tag drops off within days), or it over-closes (and damages the ear or pulls through). Using a generic pliers-style tool introduces operator-to-operator variability and is slow at scale. The LA Pias Applicator is geometrically matched to the LA Pias tag format, so every tag closes the same way every time, with the same finger pressure, regardless of who is performing the procedure.
For facilities tagging hundreds of animals across a breeding program or pharmacology study, the per-tag time saving and the reduction in lost-tag re-tagging events are both meaningful. The autoclavable variant lets the applicator move through the surgical kit without a separate cleaning workflow.
Typical Use Cases
- Tagging cohorts at weaning across a breeding colony.
- Treatment-arm tagging at study start.
- Re-tagging animals where a tag has been lost.
- Veterinary or facility-wide colony management.
