Thermal Place Preference
The Thermal Place Preference apparatus monitors temperature preferences in rodents by measuring time spent in two compartments set at different temperatures. An evolution of the hot/cold plate test providing operator-independent evaluation of thermal aversion from −5° to 65°C.

The Thermal Place Preference test is an evolution of the Hot/Cold Plate test, monitoring temperature preferences by measuring the time spent in two compartments set at two different temperatures. This operator-independent nociception assessment tool for freely-moving rodents connects a standard hot/cold plate with an auxiliary heating plate via a corridor, with videotracking automation for objective scoring.

Research Applications
The Thermal Place Preference apparatus is used to study temperature aversion and preference in models of cold allodynia, thermal hyperalgesia, and inflammatory pain. As an evolution of the hot/cold plate test, it provides continuous monitoring of spontaneous temperature preference in freely-moving rodents without requiring experimenter intervention at the behavioral endpoint.

The Thermal Place Preference (Cat. 35350/35360) enables automated scoring of temperature-aversion behavior in unrestrained rodents. It is used in inflammatory and neuropathic pain models to assess thermal allodynia and hyperalgesia without the ceiling effects of standard hot/cold plate testing.
How does the Thermal Place Preference test differ from the Hot/Cold Plate test?
Unlike the Hot/Cold Plate, the Thermal Place Preference allows animals to freely choose between two temperature zones, removing forced restraint and providing a more ethologically valid measure of thermal preference.
What temperature range is supported?
The system supports temperatures from −5.0°C to 65.0°C in 0.1°C increments with ±0.1°C precision.
Can video tracking be integrated?
Yes, video tracking software can be integrated to automatically score time spent in each compartment, distance traveled, and other behavioral parameters.
How is data exported?
Data is stored on a USB flash drive and includes time in each compartment, temperature readings, and latency data.
What is the warranty?
12 months standard warranty, extendable to 24 months upon product registration.
