Climbing Test
The Climbing Test measures vertical activity in rodents as an objective indicator of pain-depressed behavior. Developed with Prof. Sidney Negus at VCU, this automated system uses capacitive height sensors to capture vertical movement in a cylindrical mesh cage.

The Climbing Test measures vertical activity in rodents as an indicator of pain-depressed behavior. Developed in collaboration with Prof. Sidney Negus at Virginia Commonwealth University, the Ugo Basile automated system replicates manual climbing assays with objective capacitive sensors, capturing a movement parameter previously underinvestigated despite rodents inhabiting three-dimensional environments.

Research Applications
The Climbing Test is employed in studies of pain-depressed behavior — measuring how analgesic compounds restore vertical locomotion suppressed by noxious stimuli. Developed by Prof. Sidney Negus at VCU, it is used for preclinical screening of opioids, NSAIDs, and other analgesic drugs by quantifying spontaneous climbing in a cylindrical mesh cage across a range of pain models.

The Ugo Basile Climbing Test (Cat. 36103) is cited in research on pain-depressed behavior, motor impairment, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and drug-induced changes in vertical locomotor activity. The automated capacitive sensor array enables objective, bias-free measurement of climbing height and time without observer intervention.
What pain models is the Climbing Test suitable for?
The Climbing Test is suitable for inflammatory, neuropathic, visceral, and post-surgical pain models, measuring suppression of vertical activity by noxious stimuli.
How are climbing events detected?
Climbing events are detected by 7 capacitive height-sensing rings plus 1 sensor on the roof, providing accurate positional data throughout the experiment.
What software is included?
X-PAD software is included for data acquisition, with results exported in .csv format via USB flash drive or LAN connection.
What are the cylinder dimensions?
The cylinder has an external diameter of 12 cm, internal diameter of 11.5 cm, and a sensing height of 29 cm.
What is the warranty?
12 months standard warranty, extendable to 24 months upon product registration.
